In 2010, President Obama passed the Affordable Healthcare Act, also known as Obama-care. Obama's initiative is more than twenty thousand pages long and could add six point two trillion dollars to the national deficit. This act was done to give everyone the opportunity to have health insurance, especially people who cannot afford insurance on their own. However, instead of helping people afford health insurance, it forces people to purchase insurance that may not be affordable for them based on their income. It also makes employers pay for their employees' healthcare. This expenditure is covered by increasing the prices of goods and services. Obamacare actually has a lot of out-of-pocket expenses, too. If you made $24,000 a year and didn't have health insurance, your premiums would fall below 7% of your income. If you were to have an accident your expenses could be $5,200. “Even with additional financial subsidies, the law guarantees people modest incomes and high living expenses.” (Under Obamacare, some “underinsured” leave out of pocket) Additionally, young, healthy people are usually uninsured and usually make only the minimum wage or slightly higher. Being healthy they risk remaining uninsured. “Now they will have to take out insurance or pay a hefty fine. If they choose to purchase insurance, they will pay higher prices than they would have paid if they had purchased it before Obamacare took effect.” (Top 5 Negative Impacts of Obamacare Reform) Another negative aspect of the law is that it requires many young, healthy people to pay premiums without using insurance to cover the expenses of those who are sick. “It comes down to getting a whole group of young people involved in the program. So far scattered... middle of paper......h cause shop prices to rise everywhere. So that those who work fewer hours and take home less money now pay higher prices for goods. Bottom line, Obamacare will increase unemployment and reduce incomes. It takes away our right to decide whether or not we want health insurance. It raises the price of healthcare to something that is harder to afford. It doesn't keep the promises it made before it became law. The US federal government already has programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security that are having financial problems. Why add another one when the government has already demonstrated that such programs are not viable? I think the law should be repealed due to the negative consequences. I think the government needs to find a better way to reform healthcare.
