Topic > Summary of Malthus' Theorem - 1068

Malthus' Theorem is an observation that explains that the supply of food in our world increases steadily while our population increases exponentially. In the film we see a scene talking about how our global food systems are unable to sustain the required demand. This has resulted in violence around the world, all of which can be traced back to food supply shortages. In our society today we aim for efficiency to control the demand we have for food, to do this we grow a limited number of crops and have these crops grown by a limited number of companies in order to make meeting the demand more efficient. One of the major downsides to all of this is that our global agricultural sector is highly dependent on many factors to succeed. Stress applied to this system can cause enormous problems. This is proven when oil prices have increased and food has also increased due to the fact that our food industry depends on that product to function efficiently. There have been many food riots around the world due to food shortages. Food is in short supply because we are struggling to sustain the level of food needed to meet the demands of our explosive population growth. This is a big problem today because if it continues to go in this direction we will no longer be able to support the needs of our population, which can cause untold amounts of unrest in our country. This term connects to the video because it connects to the video along the lines of how our agricultural division is constantly trying to become more efficient to meet the demand for food by our ever-increasing demand for food.
