When a person is accused of a crime they are declared innocent or guilty. This is the basic idea of justice and is what many believe should happen if someone has done something controversial. In the play The Oresteia by Aeschylus, the story of the guilt of Clytemnestra or the innocents is questioned. She does a lot of things that people are not very happy about and those controversial actions throughout the story, especially in the first part, Agamemnon gets her into trouble. As we explore the case he builds against his innocents by exploring the killings of Agamemnon and Cassandra and the boastful expression regarding the killings. This action causes a lot of anger in Clytemnestra. One could well understand why she would behave this way. Clytemnestra sees the killing of her daughter as if she was killed only for her husband's gain. He also feels that he could have chosen a different virgin to sacrifice. On the other hand, if you look at Agamemnon's problem, things could be different. Agamemnon was the general of his army and the leader his men looked up to. So when the profit came to him saying "I will give you the wind in exchange for a virginal sacrifice", he interpreted it as if he had sacrificed someone close to him. He thought in this way that he was being asked for a reason to be the one who made the real sacrifice. Then Agamemnon chose his virgin daughter and sacrificed her with common sense for what was best for the army. The problem is that Clytemnestra doesn't see it that way and this is what causes future events that make us question her innocence. Agamemnon is Clytemnestra's husband, father of three children, and the leading general in the Trojan War. The prophet Calchas approaches Agamemnon and tells him that the sacrifice of a virgin will send wind to allow the ships of his troop to go into battle. Agamemnon decides to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to obtain the wind needed to go into battle. Iphigenia doesn't realize what's happening to her until it's too late. Although she tries to escape her fate, she is still given to Calchas as a sacrificial virgin. Clytemnestra has the ten years of the Trojan War to plan her revenge on Agamemnon. Upon his return Clytemnestra shows him some love. That love she showed quickly turns to anger and hatred when Clytemnestra is Agamemnon with his lover Cassandra.
