The word Celebrity is defined as "the state or quality of being widely honored and acclaimed". The Latin root of the word, 'celebrem' (celebrity), simply means "fame". However, with the presence of the definition of the word, the questions "Who is a celebrity?" and “What makes someone a celebrity?” are lifted. The answers to these questions are contained in two main points: how respectable a person must be and also what he or she has done to gain this reputation. In many cases, the question "Who is a celebrity?" is asked to the general occupancy of a room, you will hear the shouts of great names like "Pat Benetar" or "Jack Black", people who have somehow exposed themselves to the benevolent reception of the general population. However, not all names provided familiarize the entire room, while an individual currently occupying the room may be known to all other occupants. Unfortunately for this individual this does not mean that he has achieved the much coveted "Celebrity" status, simply because people who have seen the individual day in and day out know his name. Celebrity status appears to be achieved when a person gets a high level of media attention or when the celebrity in question gains a following of people or fans, whose interests are piqued by the celebrity's actions. It is also a general belief that a celebrity is a person who can be considered a role model, someone who the massive population of fans and/or followers adores and wants to make their life similar to the celebrity they idolize. Although the celebrity is idolized by a large following, this does not necessarily mean that the celebrity is a good role model. However, despite the bad decisions that celebrities often seem to make, there is still a crowd that follows them expecting how they will be able to emulate the next person. This general assumption can be given what appears to be a solid position with things like celebrity branding. There are countless items branded with the names of those seen in the media, from perfumes to clothing to video games, these branded items sell for twice the price of their competitors and also sell in double the quantities. With this type of example how could one argue that celebrity status is achieved by any means other than being a highly acclaimed role model for the masses??
