Topic > The stigma of mental illness - 1044

For many sufferers, living with the stigma of mental illness is a daily, external and internal battle. Precisely, factors such as: discrimination, social rejection and humiliation are just some of the problems experienced by consumers (Horsfall, Cleary & Hunt, 2010). As a result, many sufferers lose their self-esteem and begin to exclude themselves from social contexts, consequently making the path to recovery more complicated (Cruwys & Gunaseelan, 2015). Some strategies that could combat these problems include consumer-led education, nurse-led education, and further research to improve patient self-image. For example, consumers' general life experiences play a major role in individuals' decision-making abilities, but when challenged, these abilities could be positively or negatively affected. Glover, Corrigan, and Wilkniss (2010) explained how discrimination, when experienced by the consumer in the workplace, influences his or her decision whether or not to seek employment in the future. However, the results differed based on gender and race. Furthermore, the devastating effects of mental illness stigma can impact marital unions in various cultural, religious, or ethnic groups. According to Youssef and Deane (2006) Arabs recognize that they are embarrassed to use available mental health services, due to stigma and to preserve their dignity. Furthermore, in the Arab community, if a person has a mental illness, he or she is unlikely to get married. Or, in the case of marriage, if one partner (usually the wife) hides her mental illness, the husband can exercise the right to ask for a divorce. Therefore, the decision to use available services...... middle of paper ......ement in one's care and in finding coping strategies. (Gliddon et al., 2015) studied the benefits of an online psychotherapeutic program in the form of a discussion forum and discovered its potential as a positive method for minimizing the effects of stigma. Strategies with similar objectives are implemented across the country by different organizations such as schools and police, among healthcare professionals and in various settings such as rural, regional or urban. However, consumers still face stigma and its effects on their lives. On the positive side, the constant anti-stigma promotion activity is improving the trend of understanding in our society. But more optimistic is the fact that, beyond that, researchers regularly analyze and evaluate these approaches to gain a greater understanding of how to best reduce stigma..
