It is not a neutral description of a system. Beliefs and values tell a story about why things are done a particular way. The people who are governed in these systems are kept compliant. Every social system, including a meritocratic social system, has an ideology that functions to explain and justify its existence as a way of life. The ideology of meritocracy strengthens the social system so that everyone can feel confident in their position in society and accept it without question. Individuals continue to work within the system because the narrative seems natural and indisputable; they believe it works to everyone's benefit. There is no way to verify whether a system actually works, which means that the system can neither be proven right or wrong. This unconditional following happens for students at an early age and helps them understand how Marx's theory of social reproduction works
