Topic > Parallels of Destiny in Crash and Oedipus the King

Destiny for most people is something that will inevitably happen in their lives, something they are destined to have or be. According to Dictionary.com, fate is defined as something that inevitably happens to a person, but for others, fate is simply a coincidence. The debate about whether fate is part of our daily lives has been ongoing from the ancient Greeks to today. The film Crash parallels the play Oedipus the King in that both characters experience some form of destiny in their lives. From now on, this essay will discuss the media's portrayal of fate and how it is actually a part of our daily lives. In the novel, Oedipus the King, Oedipus' father Laius met the Oracle of Delphi who predicts that his son will inevitably kill him and marry his wife. Without common conscience, Laius tries to kill his son but fails because he does not realize that Oedipus is not dead; rather he was seriously injured. Due to the existence of destiny, Oedipus was able to survive the atrocious treatment his father endured, and one day he will return and fulfill the prophecy by killing his father. After Oedipus answered the riddle of the Sphinx, he was crowned king of Thebes and ended up marrying an older woman named Jocasta, who he fails to realize is his mother. When Oedipus meets an old man at the crossroads, he becomes uncontrollably mad and eventually kills him. The old man turns out to be Laius, Oedipus' father. One of Oedipus' natural flaws regarding the issue of admitting himself to killing his father, is that he is overly arrogant and has a god complex about ruling Thebes. Oedipus is considered arrogant due to the fact that he is naturally arrogant in thinking that because… middle of paper… the movie really opened my eyes to how we are still struggling with racial discrimination to this day. Destiny is something we have all gone through in our lives. Whether it's where we are going in life or how we live our lives, there is some form of destiny that guides us in doing so. As in Oedipus, he is destined to kill his father and marry his mother, but because he believes he can control his own destiny, it ultimately leads to his death. Even with the movie Crash where racial discrimination is a part of fate where because you are born with this skin color, you are destined to be judged your whole life no matter how little good you may have done. To conclude, destiny is something we all share as human beings, and as human beings, we tend to believe that we can control our destiny, but ultimately destiny is just a four letter word that may or may not change your life for Always..
