Analysis of a Scene of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens I chose to look at how the relationship between Pip and Magwitch develops throughout the novel. I have chosen 3 key scenes where Magwitch and Pip meet and will examine how each is portrayed in terms of character, development, setting and the messages or morals that Dickens is trying to convey. Magwitch first meets Pip at the cemetery on the marshes, from this we see that Pip is a lonely child, who has lost his mother and father. Magwitch threatens to kill Pip and "rip out his heart and liver" unless Pip obeys Magwitch's orders to bring him some "spirit" and drink for him. The relationship as it first blossomed is full of fear and terror and we immediately understand that Magwitch is in control of the situation, but there is still the lingering fear that he will be seen or handed over to the authorities if Magwitch made a mistake in 'be seen by someone else, or if Pip had told someone else where he was. The first meeting place of Pip and Magwitch is highly ironic, because pip is visiting his parents' graves and then, ironically, Magwitch arrives, who will later be Pip's benefactor and will act and play the role of Pip's surrogate. A pathetic fallacy is used in this graveyard scene as it is set in the marshes in the dead of night with the "cold air whipping" around them, to resemble the frightening emotions Pip feels when threatened by Magwitch. the marshes, which is also ironic because when Magwitch returns to see Pip later in the novel there is a fear that he might be hanged. It also sets the setting to look like death. Even the black night sky will resemble death and deep, dark fears. The cemetery is a "shabby, nettle-filled place," the description making the scene more frightening, and the overgrown weeds may be where others are hiding. The setting is very gothic, in true Victorian style and when contemporary readers read it they were automatically prepared for something unpleasant to happen. When Magwitch orders Pip to get him food and drink from where he lived or where he could, Pip could take advantage of this situation and tell the authorities or his guardians, but he doesn't..
