Topic > My Search for a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering - 803

When I was in school, I wondered what the driving force of movement in daily life could be, so I approached my father. He simply responded to food and the energy that comes from it. But as a child I didn't understand what actually happened in the process. As the years went by, I developed a keen interest in science for the magic it is capable of and the logic behind it. I eventually learned that the body gets its energy in the form of food from the earthly element, carbon. Although 50% of the body is made up of water, it is the edible form of carbon that fuels us. This allowed me to visualize the body as a factory loaded with “fuel” controlled chemical reactions, similar to a car. This fascinated me greatly and inspired me to pursue chemical engineering during my undergraduate degree for a solid foundation in petroleum/oil and gas engineering. The burning desire pushed me to understand the subject with the revelation that more than chemicals and chemical reactions, Chemical Engineering is about unit operations, chemical processes and problem-solving techniques. During my course of study, subjects such as Organic Chemistry, Chemical Process Industries and Chemical Reaction Engineering discovered the nature of hydrocarbons and the processes involved in their exploitation and the kinetics behind such reactions, although I was exposed to other fundamental areas, such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, calculations of chemical processes and also transport phenomena. It was only due to the exceptional faculty and laboratory facilities of my institution that I have now acquired a good understanding of the subjects. My dedicated academic efforts paid off when I secured 1st place in both the assessment tests and the semester exams in my department... halfway through the test... they increase dramatically, driven largely by population growth. Innovations are a necessity. With my inherent learning interests, I bring with me substantial contributions, ingenuity, and a willingness to learn more. I consider myself a successful professional actively involved in the industrial sector. I firmly believe that a master's degree from the University of Calgary will provide me with the knowledge and exposure needed to achieve my goal. I firmly believe that studying at the intellectually acclaimed faculty and excellent research facilities of the University of Calgary would allow me to grasp new perspectives, expose me to new age technology, ultimately broaden my thinking capacity. With its extraordinary infrastructure coupled with an eminent student body, I aspire to be an integral part of the multicultural and inspiring environment of the University of Calgary.
