The symphony was initially dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, a French political and military leader who promised hope and prosperity to the people. Beethoven respected Napoleon greatly, but things changed when Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor. On the cover of the symphony Beethoven had torn out the place where Napoleon's name had left a torn memory of who Napoleon had become. The Sinfonia Eroica was the first symphony of its kind. It was twice as long as the previous symphonies; only the first movement is the length of previous symphonies written. It consists of four movements, Allegro con Brio, Marcia funebre: Adagio assai in C minor, Scherzo: Allegro lively and Finale: Allegro tanto. He used greater dynamic contrast than in his previous symphonies. What really sets it apart from past works is Beethoven's use of characters.
