From extensive research it is clear that many critics would agree that the New Wave of French cinema has been unsatisfactory, even if quite a few respectable films have emerged from it . With the appearance of 1960's Breathless came a new (for the time) film, aesthetically and ethically. Cleanly but rebelliously, Godard states: "Anything is possible when it comes to cinema, there are no limits to the possibilities of the cinematic form." Godard understood the rules and clichés of cinema and had the courage to play with them. Godard separated himself from classical cinema to make a film that was at the height of cinematic innovation, while at the same time paying homage to those films of the past, just as many artists did during that time. He innovated countless conventions and proposed a new vision scandalous for the time. Godard would continue to make great films, but it was Breathless that changed cinema indefinitely. With a brief overview of Godard and his film Breathless it will be clear why his film is timeless and has had such an impact on cinema. Jean-Luc Godard was born in Paris, France, in 1930. Jean-Luc had three brothers whom his wealthy French-Swiss parents raised mainly in Switzerland. With his success established primarily as a French director, screenwriter, and film critic, Godard is often recognized as a member of the 1960s French "New Wave" film movement. Similar to his "New Wave" contemporaries, Godard disapproved of the "Tradition of Quality" of conventional French cinema, which "emphasized craftsmanship over innovation, favored established directors over new directors, and preferred the great works of the past to experimentation".
