Topic > Pursuing a Nursing Career: Personal Narrative - 1302

To achieve one's goal, the goal must be well defined, firm, and the individual must be fully committed to achieving it. Pursuing a career as a primary healthcare nurse practitioner has always been my primary goal throughout my education and training since the age of seventeen. Over the past three years of working within a surgical inpatient unit as a registered nurse, I have become aware of the lack of community resources and access to healthcare available in rural areas. This inspired me to apply to the University of Western Ontario's Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program for the fall of 2014. After completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Western Ontario, I am certain that no other institution can provide the same student experience that I have been fortunate enough to obtain. Within this essay, I will first describe my understanding of the role of the nurse in primary healthcare in Ontario, second I will describe my motivation for wanting to become a nurse and third I will describe the professional and personal attributes I will bring to the Role of the nurse.1. The role of the nurse in primary health care in Ontario is to work collaboratively with the interprofessional team, patients, and patients' families to communicate diagnoses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and provide care using a holistic approach. The professional nurse does not replace other health professionals, but works together with them focusing on “health promotion, disease and injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and support” (Ontario PHCNP Program, 2014). The Canadian Nurse's Association believes that the professional nurse... at the heart of the paper... ability and my dedication to learning new knowledge helps me provide professional and exceptional care. My personal qualities include my passion for helping people and my outgoing, positive attitude. I believe I am the perfect person to enroll in the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Western Ontario this fall due to my academic abilities, my love for the nursing profession and my drive to improve health and well-being of those in rural areas.
