Robert Frost's poem “Out, Out” is narrated so that readers can learn the story of a boy who does so because of accidentally cutting his hand with a circular saw. This poem stands out from the others because Frost turns the entire thirty-nine-line poem into a one-line paragraph that contains no stanzas. On the other hand, Linkin Park's song "Waiting for the End" is a pop rock song, performed by an American rock band, which seems very different when compared to Frost's poem. Although the creations of these artworks are made in different time periods, they are similar in many ways. Robert Frost's poem "Out, Out" and the band Linkin Park's "Waiting for the End" are similar in terms of theme, title, and imagery, but these similarities may also establish the differences between the two pieces. First, the themes of loss and care are persistent in both pieces. However, “Out, Out” refers to the loss of a limb, and the end of life, it is very different from “Waiting for the End” where there is a loss of the presence of a significant other. In the poem, the protagonist is doing his normal labor-intensive daily job and is asked to saw wood using an electric circular saw. The conflict arises when the sister leaves the house to tell the boy who works that dinner is ready. The crisis is the reaction: “As if to prove that the saws knew what dinner meant, [the saw] sprang out of the boy's hand” (Frost 385) and landed in the other? hand, cutting it off. The theme of loss continues in “Waiting for the End” but in a slightly different way. The main character gets lost in his own thoughts immersing himself in the thought of letting go of his significant other, thus breaking the relationship. Mike, the protagonist......middle of paper......that life is snuffed out while “Waiting for the End” gives light to the protagonist who is literally waiting for the relationship to end. Both works use personification to a lesser degree, but both prominently feature the use of imagery as symbolism which is shown in the poem by the elements of nature positioning the location of the story and in the poem using realism in the imagery to portray the emotions. The two pieces, although showing great differences, can be seen as similar. Works Cited Cyrus, Ryan. "Linkin Park Lyrics - Waiting for the End." AZ Lyrics Universe.AZLyrics.com, nd Web.
