Topic > Good versus Evil in Arthur Miller's The Crucible

"You state that you coldly goaded your daughter into crying witchcraft against George Jacobs who is now in prison" (96). In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, people will do anything to get what they want. In the city of Salem, good versus evil plays an important role. The people of Salem constantly argue about who tells the truth and who lies. People are also judged based on their religious views. Even though there was a lack of evidence, the city of Salem was wrongly labeling people as good or bad. Rebecca Nurse was a good person at heart. Her image changed when she was accused of witchcraft and people began to consider her an evil person. “As for Rebecca herself, the general opinion of her character was so high that it explains how anyone dared to call her a witch – and above all, how adults could bring themselves to lay their hands on her” (26). It shows that everyone thought Rebecca was a good and helpful person. Even though people knew he had a kind heart, they believed the accuser. This is obviously not fair because you shouldn't believe everything that is said about a person, especially if there is no evidence to prove it. Parris sent Mercy to get a doctor for Abigail because she was sick. The narrator said, "Thomas Putnam's little daughter was the one who threw a fit of rage during the hearing and pointed to Rebecca as her attacker. To top it off, Mrs. Putnam accused Rebecca's spirit of 'tempting her to iniquity,' a charge that had more truth than Mrs. Putnam could have known" (26). This shows that Rebecca was an easy scapegoat. They could easily accuse her of something she didn't do. Mrs. Putnam saw that her daughter was accusing her, so she decided to accuse her too. This shows that they were simply naming people, so that their story... middle of paper... r. Abigail first accused Tituba of witchcraft. Abigail says, "She sends her spirit upon me in church; she makes me laugh during prayer!" (44). He also said, “She comes to me every night to go and drink blood” (44). Abigail had to make up a story for people to believe her. He saw Tituba as a scapegoat and she was a slave. Once people started believing her, she started accusing more and more people. On the other hand, we know that he lies and that the accused people are innocent. People also believed Abigail because she was Reverend Pariss' niece. Good versus evil is a very important theme in The Crucible. Innocent people were accused and evil people were trusted. Many people were accused and killed. It got to the point where there was almost no one left in the city. The court should never have killed those people without evidence.
