Everyone knows that parents' first concern is the safety of their children. With the increase in violence in schools, parents have begun to question whether their children are truly safe in the school environment. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine have made parents, administrators, and educators feel the need to be proactive about children's safety. Reacting to situations like these is not enough when children's lives are at stake. The administration has begun to brainstorm ways to help ensure the protection of its students. The idea of making teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the radar for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have begun to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers due to the high risk they expose themselves to. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of teachers' weapons and hurting themselves or other students. Since this idea seems rather extreme, I believe there are other less dramatic and more positive alternatives, such as having armed security guards in schools. On December 12, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School was invaded by an armed and unstable man. . Earlier that year the school's principal, Dawn Hochsprung, had implemented a new security system that required all visitors to enter the school via visual identification. Many schools have also installed similar security systems to keep school doors locked at all times during the school day, helping to ensure student safety.
