An analytical essay on Hamlet as a ghost story, detective story and revenge storyWilliam Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, is a ghost story, a novel detective story and a revenge story all in one plot. The qualities of all three types of stories are displayed throughout the show. The ghost story concerns Hamlet Senior and the circumstances surrounding his untimely death at the hands of the current king, Claudius. He is tortured in hell until his death is properly avenged. The investigative aspect of Hamlet is determined by the fact that Hamlet tries to understand whether his father's ghost was real or not and also to what extent, if at all, his mother, the "virtuous" Queen Gertrude, was involved in the murder of his father. Both Hamlet and Laertes bring another aspect to this very versatile play, seeking revenge for their father's death, each in their own way. By considering the work as one or all of these different aspects, we learn to have different perspectives on the work. The story of Hamlet Senior's death is the ghost story aspect of the play. Hamlet Senior, the late king, was tormented in hell during the daylight hours and was forced to walk around the castle at night. He declared that he was "condemned for a time to walk by night, and for the day confined to fast in the fire, until the horrible crimes committed during my natural days [being the late king] are burned and purified." ' (50 lines 10-13). His release from this torture will not be allowed until his avenger is avenged by his son, Hamlet and Bernard will all see the ghost of the late king, but the apparition will only speak to his son. The ghost gives an unnatural feel to the play and leaves the reader/viewer wondering if it was real or was it all in Hamlet's mind. In this melodrama his first task is to figure out if the ghost of his father he thought he saw was actually real and, if it was, it wasn't fake or a demon. Then, he must decide whether his father's ghost was sincere about Claudius, his father's brother, Hamlet. uncle who was also the reigning king, committing fratricide against his father. To find evidence of Claudius' involvement, Hamlet uses actors, to arouse deeply rooted feelings, hopefully, lodged in his consciousness..
