Have you ever felt like you were panicking or afraid of something? If so, then you are facing common symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety in young adults is a great topic to trend towards due to this time where technology and social media are a factor. Many anxiety disorders in young adults include social phobias, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic attacks. We are currently in the twenty-first century and young adults are feared by many things called social phobias. For example, social phobias would be public speaking, which many people fear and some young adults fear it much more than others. These young adults are at risk for depression associated with their anxiety. A 2001 article on social anxiety explains how young adults may need intervention to overcome anxiety and depression, this may just be medicine (Stein 2001). Many studies have been linked to social phobias in young adults through surveys. These surveys provided results that helped psychologists understand what the best treatments might be for these young adults. Furthermore, surveys stated that females had a higher rate of social phobia than males. These studies assume that substance use was a factor in their life that led to depression and social phobias. I believe this may be true, as many young adults smoke marijuana these days. Young adults who use these substances can become depressed and suicidal due to drug cravings and make them antisocial at school because they are “high.” Additionally, researchers have found that young adults who suffer from social phobias are insecure about their bodies.
