Topic > Discrimination after 9/11 - 1021

On September 11, 2001, America was the victim of a brutal terrorist attack by members of the extremist group Al-Qaeda. That day will not only be remembered for the lives lost and damage to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but for the changes it brought to the daily lives of Americans and the perceptions of different people, particularly those of Middle Eastern origin. Even now, nearly 13 years later, we are still dealing with discrimination against those of the Muslim faith and the loss of some basic freedoms that Americans took for granted. Today, the terms “terrorist group” and “Muslim faith” have become confused under one definition. Al-Qaeda is a group of people who operate under an extreme and harsh interpretation of the word Sunni Muslim, which the Americans at the time of the attack did not understand. This lack of understanding of the Muslim faith leads to the perception that not all people of that faith are to be trusted; and so far, targeted. A better word to use would be “racial profiling.” This concept is not new to the American public, dating back to when white settlers came to America and enslaved Native Americans for labor in the 1620s. (Definition of racial profiling). From September 2001 to today, the public perception of the Muslim faith has not changed, also due to media propaganda and its inaccuracies. The Bush administration coined the term “War on Terror,” for example (Walsh, War on Terror). America now has TSA monitoring terminals with full body scanners and full body “searches” (airport screening). Tests like these have become an unnecessary hassle for most travelers, but a nightmare for anyone with Middle Eastern features, something... middle of paper... and the links within give a basic overview of the TSA security protocols used at airports. Provide a simple list of the protocols used. Mostly based on projection and advanced imaging technologies. It describes in more depth how the technology identifies threats. Walsh, Kenneth T. This website describes the timeline of events that occurred during the search for missing Malaysian Flight 370 earlier this year. According to information, there were two Iranian men on the plane who were immediately targeted because they had stolen passports. Later, their case was dropped after further research. They had no connection to any terrorist group.
