First They Killed My Father is an emotional and heartbreaking memoir told from the point of view of a child, Loung Ung. It's a moving story told about a family's survival in vivid detail and is more breathtaking and extreme as told by five-year-old Loung. At the beginning of the horror, Loung had to go through a lot of travel during his young age; the death of his parents and siblings, the evacuation from Phnom Penh, his hometown, the knowledge he now has of the regime and the loss of his economic status. This family was brought together trying to survive and some managed to stay strong and survive while others did not. Loung explains her experiences and how her family supported each other, but ultimately managed to be the only one to survive. Each family member learns from these life experiences, especially from Loung. Each family member adopts different techniques to survive, including sacrifice, separation and secrecy. The most important technique that had the greatest effect was all the sacrifices each family member made to stay strong and survive. Every single member of the Ung family did everything they could to stay alive. Everyone looked at each other with true meaning. The difficult times they went through made their relationships with each other stronger. Such sacrifices came from stealing food, maintaining relationships, keeping secrets, being separated, and caring for each other. “In the following weeks, Kim… in the center of the card… led by the Khmer Rouge. The Ung family took many risks, accepted sacrifices, and did their best to survive. All members made their sacrifice for each other. They wanted to survive and do everything they could, no matter the consequences. Stealing food so as not to starve, keeping secrets so as not to be killed, and separating so as not to get the entire family killed. They simply wanted to live. The sacrifices made were necessary and necessary to survive. No one was selfish or put themselves before anyone. They put themselves in dangerous situations. If they hadn't taken any risks they would have starved sooner. They were in a terrible state. The conditions were horrible and they had to do anything to keep alive. Every sacrifice meant everything and they were what kept them alive as long as possible.
