Revenge in The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan PoeIn the story "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe, he writes about a man named Montressor who for some reason (one we don't know) swears revenge on a highly respected and even feared boy named Fortunato, to better understand the story even if you want to know the author Edgar Allen Poe. Edgar Allen Poe had a huge influence on many short story writers. Most of his stories deal with gothic detective stories and horror, and in most of his stories the readers experience the story through a first-person narrator as in "The Cask of Amontillado" who tells the story. The fact that Poe presents a first-person narrator allows for the possibility that the information he provides is unreliable. From this we can conclude that the way Montresor sees things does not correspond to reality. From this we can consider that Montresor is crazy and better understand the nature of vindictive behavior. In this story, from when Montressor swears revenge to when Fortunato is condemned to his fate, there are many things that happen, such as some foreshadowing and ironies such as when Montressor reveals that he is a Freemason. I will also support an analysis to support the story's theme of "revenge" and how it is demonstrated through the story of "The Cask of Amontillado". By analyzing the rest of the story we will come to understand that Montresor could really be crazy. Throughout the story Montresor presents himself as a rational person. This is true throughout... middle of the card... all the way to the catacombs. Therefore, both the motto and the coat of arms imply that the entire history of the Montresor family is full of acts of revenge. This is my analysis of "The Barrel of Amontillado" in support of the theme of revenge and how it goes with the story. By reading this story and examining it you can easily say that this is one of Poe's best works. It's just one of those perfect horror stories that throws all these different clues and ironies at you that you really think about throughout the whole story. The theme here is best described as revenge through certain ways in the tale such as that of Montresor's weapons and motto.
