What does slang mean? If you look it up in a dictionary you will find the meaning of "Slang" which is "very informal in vocabulary and idiom which is typically more metaphorical, playful, elliptical, vivid and ephemeral than ordinary speech". Slang can be found everywhere in the world because it is part of the colloquial language that people use every day, the expressions you use to communicate with others. Have you ever wondered if foreigners understand what you say when you use slang in conversation or why we add these expressions to our vocabulary? As you know, every country, state, city and neighborhood has its own distinctive slang, words or phrases. How can we know them? If you travel the world, you will hear the difference between one language and another, but you don't have to travel the world to know slang. First it might be expensive, and second, you probably don't have the time to do it, and third, you can feel the difference right here in the US. If you pay attention you will hear particular expressions or words that are used every day as slang, for example in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles you can find that hundreds of gangs have their own slang, sometimes they use it as their own way of communicating. A particular example is when you go to New York you will hear that people often say the expression "Yous" which means the correct plural form of you. Another example is when people ask you, “Are you from “Chgo”? Which means short for Chicago. Writers also use slangs when they write, another common way to hear a slang is in songs, when singers don't use the correct way of the language, they just want to co...... middle of paper ......expressions that people use when they speak. When I came to the United States it was so difficult to understand people when they used slang in their conversations, I still asked people if they could repeat what they had just said or if they could explain to me the meaning of the words they use when they speak. Some words and phrases used in the United States have similar meanings in Mexico, like "babe" which also has a meaning different depending on the context or the person to whom the slang is addressed. In conclusion, I can say that we must learn the meaning of the different expressions, phrases, words and slang that are used every day in order to understand people. This helps us to interact well with each person and also to be able to be accepted into certain groups, organizations or clubs.
