“The military is for you.” “Join the Armed Forces.” "Fight for your country." These are the slogans that today's youth hear and see in all media. They hear nothing but the positive aspects of the military. They never stop to think what kind of life that soldier lives when he comes home after serving. American soldiers or soldiers in general are considered heroes. They put their lives at risk to protect their country. However, what few people seem to understand is that a soldier's battle doesn't just take place on the battlefield. It is in their daily lives during and after their service. It is very common for soldiers to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder for short. Post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a mental condition that causes a feeling of sadness and remorse, a sense of irreplaceable loss, and a feeling of fear and horror due to a traumatizing experience (Young, 3). This disorder is very popular among soldiers after the war. Cases of post-traumatic stress disorder were found in most soldiers who served in World Wars I and II. However, the most recognized cases were founded after the Vietnam War (Young, 3). The soldiers felt a feeling of shame and memories of the battles and images of the traumatic experience entered and left their heads at all times. They wouldn't sleep because the images would wake them up. These are the untold stories of a soldier's life. Even though the media tells us to join the military and fight for our country, one should ask why they refuse to give the other side of the story. Why don't the media tell us about the post-war period? Because it keeps the other side of the story away from those who are recruiting...... middle of paper...... e.g. This is what you won't see on the evening news. You will never hear the other side of a soldier's life or the other side of war. The media won't say it because there won't be as many people joining the military then as there are now. They refuse to show the truth because they know that if they do people will notice and start to see the flaws in our society and that is not what the government wants at all. Next time you see a promo for the military simply think about what you're getting yourself into. Remember that who you see on television are actors. Ask those who actually participated in the military. See if it's really the place for you. And the next time you hear the media and the news say something about war or something, guess it. I mean, who are they trying to protect us or their jobs?
