In the novel Crispin, The Cross of Lead, this quote stands out more, as it visualizes Crispin's religious point of view. “Morality is of the utmost importance, but for us, not for God.” BY Albert Einstein. Crispin is a thirteen year old boy, the poorest in the village of Stamford. His mother died, as did the second person he trusted who was his priest; Father Quinel. As with Crispin, it matters to him what people think of him and what he thinks of himself. But this is not the most important thing Crispin cares about, he mostly cares about his religion more than anything, like praying all the time and not being a threat to others. This novel is set in England, in the year 1377. The people's main belief in the time was that they had to survive, rather than live; lives there were hard and harsh, while much corruption occurred. In Crispin people were divided into levels, the upper classes were free to do as they pleased, while the lower classes could not leave the village. Like today, teenagers in the medieval world had to find their own identity based on the information and circumstances around them. In the novel Crispin The Cross of Lead by AVI, the main character Crispin finds his identity in at least three places: his social status, his belief in God, and what others (especially Bear) think of him. But Crispin found his identity most powerfully in faith in God, as in religion. Crispin found his identity most powerfully in religion, because he always had his lead cross with him and prayed. When Crispin ran away, after his mother died and the farmer told him to give away his ox to pay the taxes, he ran away into the forest. "But apart from that flame, all was darkness and midnight fog and lay thick as death... in the middle of the paper... a way to honor them. Crispin found his identity with great strength in Faith in God, as in religion So far, the essay talks about how much Crispin believes in his belief by holding his lead cross wherever he goes, as well as praying, being honest and loyal to who he should rely was his religion, which showed his inner behavior. This could relate to the reader having faith in God, which could also change his inner behavior and personality. This confirms my thesis because having faith in God means that you must have certain behaviors and certain acts and actions. You must have beliefs to inspire you and duties to follow. Where do you find your identity with greater strength in life? New York: Hyperion, 2002. Online.
