Mel McGinnis from “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” seems like that guy everyone seems to know. He stands out from the rest; he's unique. Either you love him or you hate him. Mel is very similar to one of my good friends. They are both very individualistic and they are both annoying drunks. They are both interesting characters, though, I think the author Raymond Carver created the character of Mel based on someone he knew .Carver created Mel for one reason or another. One day I like Mel, the next I hate him always and Mel is the same way. Mel is touchy and doesn't seem to take jokes well. Despite these characteristics that frustrate most people, Mel stands out as a leader good stories. Mel tells stories throughout the entire story. He will start telling a story, get distracted, argue all his points, and then move on with the story again. Talk constantly. It seems like there wouldn't be much conversation between Mel, his wife Terri, Nick, and Nick's wife Laura if it weren't for Mel's constant chatter. He certainly leads the group. The problem is that he never expresses himself clearly...
