Topic > Conflict in Literature - 1594

There are many different elements in fiction. Although it takes many forms to make writing interesting, conflict in literature can make history interesting. Readers often identify with characters in a story, poem, or play because they stimulate the imagination, create hope for the future, and create confidence in living life. The conflict can be between two people or an internal conflict. Robert Frost "Road not Taken" the conflict is an internal conflict and in "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and "Shiloh" by Bobbie Ann Mason the conflict is between two characters. Although it takes different forms to make the writing interesting, conflict in literature can make the story interesting because the conflict can be between two characters or be an internal conflict and the conflict can also be the plot. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost is a poem with internal conflict in which the speaker must choose which path to take in life. The speaker comes to an intersection where one side is very busy and the other is less busy. This can be a major conflict for many people in life. The outcome will be unknown until the person follows a particular path. This can be worrying for some, especially if the wrong choice is made. In this poem the path less traveled “made the difference” (Kennedy & Gioia, p. 910). The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is a tale with two different conflicts. The first half of “The Story of an Hour” is a story about women's conflict with society's expectations. Her reaction to her husband's death conflicts with how other women react to the same situations. As we read the story, Mrs. Mallard is happy about her husband's death. Initially he cries, as it says in the story: “He didn't n......half the newspapers......stories set the tone for the stories. This made the story interesting and easy to continue reading. Even the suspense of how the story would end made it pretty easy to keep reading. Without these aspects of the story it would have been difficult to read. Indeed, although writing can be made interesting in different forms, conflict in literature can make history interesting. Without conflict the story or poem would be very boring and unreadable. The other forms are necessary, but without some conflict that people can identify with there is no reason to read them. Literature can be very educational and without being able to connect with the story or poetry it would be difficult to get anything out of reading. Reference: Kennedy, X. J. & Gioia, D. (1999).
