IntroductionJules Gabriel Verne (1828 - 1905) was a novelist, poet and playwright, known as one of the pioneers of science fiction as a genre. As someone who was born, raised, and lived most of his life in France, it should surprise no one that his primary language was French. His parents had close ties to the slave trade, which Jules later came to despise. Within a year he will have a brother, Paul, and later three sisters, Anna, Mathilde and Marie. Jules began school in 1834 and throughout his scholastic career he demonstrated proficiency in singing, Greek, Latin and geography along with an innate sense of curiosity about the world around him. According to his father's wishes, he moved to Paris where he studied law from 1847 to 1849. After receiving his law degree, he began writing short stories and met the author Jacques Arago. During this period he also devoted himself to poetry and wrote more than 50 poems, many of them addressed to Herminie Arnault‑Grossetière, a love interest he had at the time.
