Marriage is an everlasting commitment between two individuals to love one another, but marriages don't always have fairytale happy endings. In Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll House, Nora and Torvald Helmer learn some things about their marriage that they hadn't realized before. Nora Helmer discovers Torvald, herself, her marriage and her identity as a woman. Nora Helmer, Torvald Helmer's wife, throughout the entire play kept a secret from her husband. A few years ago, when Torvald fell ill, the doctor advised the whole family to move south so that Torvald could fully recover. Torvald did not want to pay the family's moving money, so Nora borrowed the money from the bank, without her husband's knowledge. At the time this was written, women did not have the authority to do things like what Nora did. In addition to borrowing money from the bank, without her husband knowing, she forged her father's signature on the promissory note because she would get herself into trouble, as a woman, by borrowing money much less her husband could be fired. Nora thinks that her husband, Torvald, will never find out until he repays his debt and then tells her. Well, Nora pays off her debt but the explanation to Torvald wasn't as easy and painless as Nora thought it would be. In Act III of the famous play The Doll's House Torvald finds out what Nora has done and from then on Nora realizes some things in her life. One of the things Nora learned was about her husband Torvald. Nora always had the idea that her husband was perfect and loved her like no one else. Nora also saw Torvald more as a pushover than a dictator. He seems to let Nora do what she wants... middle of paper... Orvald tried to stop her from leaving. Torvald even tried to stop her from leaving, but Nora decided she no longer depended on him and could no longer determine her actions. The main reason why Nora left Torvald was that she wanted to find herself and she realized that she no longer loved Torvald. Her love changed for him when he didn't take the blame for her that night she read the letter. Torvald was not willing to forgive her for her act of love because this should not happen. Nora and Torvald's marriage was over from the beginning because of how Torvald was so concerned about reputation. It took Nora some time to realize that her marriage wasn't perfect and wasn't just based on love. Events in life happen for a reason and Torvald read that letter to allow Nora to learn more about Torvald, herself, her marriage and her own identity..
