The fact that TC Boyle puts the line “The priest dresses in black. The same goes for the hitman. it means something. It means that both life and death or good and evil are both sides of the same coin. Both go hand in hand. They are both messengers of something greater. The hitman's first job, which we only find out later, was to kill this guy's cousin. He then tells us that he doesn't like peas, which was a harbinger of the maid's death. The hitman then goes on a talk show where he actually talks to God and his angels. The whole description of the place and the way the pediatrician has to deal with all the children (that's us) made it seem like God was talking to death. The pun at the end: "Tell me, I've always wanted to know, what does it feel like to hit someone?" it was just to make it fun. Later, when the hitman gave a drunkard $1800 and then killed him, it meant that the drunkard used all his money for the drugs that killed him. The hitman who gets married, has a child, goes to work and says hello to his neighbors is all part of creating the sense of humanity in him.
