Topic > A Tale of Two Germanys - 645

After Germany was defeated by the Allied Powers, it was given into the hands of countries that wanted to achieve peace and create general prosperity for Europe. However, peace was not maintained as Germany was soon dragged into another period of war. The Cold War was a prolonged state of military and political tension between East Berlin and West Berlin. It split the temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany, leaving the USSR and the United States as two superpowers with profound political differences over communism and democracy. The division between East and West Germany not only physically established a barrier between the two nations, but led to many differences in the development of the two nations as the United States and the USSR had different political opinions and rulings. This ultimately caused West Berlin to become more developed than East Berlin due to differences in government, culture, and overall economic structure. West Berlin was able to develop faster than East Berlin due to the general differences that existed between the two nations. West Berlin underwent various democratic changes when the Allied Powers decided to lead West Germany. Human rights and general freedom of people were recognized. Powerful leaders from France, the United States, and Great Britain gave West Germans a classy life and showed them that every individual has the ability to rise or fall by their own work ethic. However, on the other hand, in East Berlin communism was influenced by the USSR using military tactics. East Berlin soon became a tyranny and the people were granted no social mobility. As the forbidden photos of everyday life in East Germany show, people were very dissatisfied with their own political position and their readers. Overall, West Ger...... middle of paper......st. were created. The economy has also benefited greatly. However, in East Berlin, the economy was at an all-time low due to people's inability to purchase and produce food and basic necessities. This is shown directly in “The Facts of East Germany” from “Iron Kid”. It states: “Average national monthly salary: 1,000 marks (US$400).” This statistic shows that the economy of the East was not as thriving as that of the West. In conclusion, West Berlin was able to rebuild its community after World War II due to differences in government, culture, and overall economic structure.
