People face different life situations every day and counseling is a great way to deal with situations that are difficult to deal with alone. Consultants are faced with these situations and it is extremely important to be prepared and have the proper training to be able to handle a client's situation to the best of your ability. Rules and regulations exist to help keep counselors at a professional level to help guide in situations such as confidentiality, supervisor-trainee relationships, and diversity and clinical experience. In the case study presented the first ethical issue is diversity and clinical experience. James wants to use his father to strengthen his clients because he works for a newspaper. He was eager to get his first client that he hadn't prepared for, so he simply hired his first client Lisa, who was late and didn't even review the hiring documents with her. He just made him sign them without reading them, so he really had no idea what they were. James noticed that Lisa was exhibiting signs of depression such as loss of appetite, decreased motivation, and general dissatisfaction. James should have reported this to his supervisor but forgot to mention it. Firstly James should have been supervised because he doesn't have the proper training to handle Lisa's case due to his lack of diversity. Through training this would be noted as one of its weaknesses to work on expanding its diversity. The training is just that training and should be supervised so that the trainee knows what their strengths and weaknesses are to help them succeed in counseling. (APA, 2012, standard 2.01) states that psychologists should provide their service only within the limits of their expertise (American Psychology Association, (2012). ACA 2005 states that by working with the different you will gain knowledge (American Counselor's Association 2005) .To avoid the situation, James needs to be supervised so that he can learn what he needs to work on from the feedback. James must initially work on a case that he is familiar with to give him some practice and then move him to a case like Lisa's is to make sure to review all documents that need to be signed so the client can understand what they are signing.
