A&P by John UpdikeJohn Updike's short story, "A&P" is fictional in the sense that it has a common pattern that guides the reader through a series of events. These events began when three young women in bathing suits enter A&P and catch the attention of a young man named Sammy. He seems to prefer the bigger girl of the three who enter the shop. As the story continues, Sammy watches with curiosity as the provocative young women stroll through the store looking for groceries. In this fictional story, Sammy describes all three notable women, the main girl, "Queenie", describes her as the leader of the other two girls. The second young woman he described was the robust one; he completely described the stocky girl from head to toe, because Sammy had more descriptive words about her appearance. The third girl was the taller of the two. She wasn't as striking as the other two young women. The girls were barefoot and wearing bathing suits, which is why they caught Sammy's attention. The reason wasn't the swimsuits they were wearing, but the way they confidently strolled along the isles as they walked through the store. These young women were: “The kind of girls that other girls think are “Amazing” and “Attractive.” ” (48) Updike wants the reader to know that these girls wanted attention and only attention; by the way he described what they were wearing and how they showed off. The third event happens when the girls approach Sammy's checkout line. They line up with the item from the store and place it heavily in his hand as he rang the item, he notices that it wasn't wearing a ring or bracelet. He thought to himself, "Not a ring or bracelet, naked as God made them, and I wonder where the money comes from. Updike is leading the reader to believe that the girl has none." significant other to pay for her goods. The third event in this fictional narrative is the argument between Queenie and the manager, Lengel. The feud concluded that Lengel was angry about the way the girls are dressed and that they should enter the shop next time decently, But Queenie disagrees, says she is dressed decently, Lengel says: "Girls, I don't want to argue with you, after this come here with your back covered".
