I realize that understanding the culture of the people I work with is key to a successful intervention and outcome. Being sensitive to the individual's culture and gaining adequate knowledge of one's cultural background improves the productivity of the interaction I might have with a client who might be a family, an individual, a community or an organization. Understanding your own cultural background could also prevent and minimize adopting biases that potentially harm the clients I work with. In view of this, I have learned that before engaging in any individual or group activity I should take the time to understand the person's cultural background to get a sense of what is and isn't acceptable in that culture. Furthermore, I have learned to identify and use my own strength as a tool to facilitate the change processes that the client and I desire. Due to the dynamic nature of people's culture, updating myself to the emerging changes in a different culture would be one of the continuous learning areas I am focusing on. For example, in contemporary American society, I can see how immigration has brought different people with different cultures into the general population structure of the United States. Considering this, I believe that I am well-informed and culturally competent to effectively address the needs of the people I will work with in different contexts.
