Topic > Obesity: The Plight of the Lower Class - 2268

Mississippi is the fattest state in America. According to Lauran Neergaard of the Huffington Post, more than 32.5 percent of all adults in Mississippi are obese, and that's been the case for five years in a row. It also states that not only are adults obese, but that 44.4% of all Mississippi children are obese as well. This is almost one in two children. Tommy Rodgers of the Education Resources Information Center notes: In addition to being able to claim to be the fattest, Mississippians also have the right to be the poorest state in the United States, with 20.6% of the population living in poverty . Mississippi has these top two rankings: most obese and lowest per capita income, but Matthew Engel says Mississippi residents rank last in quality of education. These three factors create a strong succession of impoverished obese people who have little chance of escaping this exhausting cycle. Poverty and obesity would seem to be two qualities in people that probably wouldn't go together. The truth is that the less money you have, the more success you will try to achieve with your money. Obesity is having so much excess fat in the body that it poses medical risks (George L. Blackburn). Not only is there a difference between overweight and obese, but also classifications of degrees of obesity: for example, obese, morbidly obese, and super morbidly obese are some of these classifications. More than a billion people worldwide are obese. With 300,000 Americans dying each year from paper.../the-link-between-obesity-and-poverty>.Neergaard, Lauran.
