This was partly due to the difference between African Americans and whites. They watched white people go to church with envy. At one point there was talk of how the blacks would wait until the whites' church session was over so they could be blessed with the priest's preaching. The priest told them that if they behaved and were good on earth they would be sent to heaven. The slaves are all excited because they have the chance to be sent to the “white sky” (Endore 92). However the way the priest explains it is that God does not judge by the color of the skin, but by how a person behaves. This in itself is a political statement because it shows that the differences between the races were created by man and not by the way man was created.
