Growing up, I looked up to guys like Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and Barry Bonds. They were some of the best players to ever play the game. In recent years it has been revealed that these players were taking anabolic steroids throughout their careers. I always thought that with hard work and dedication, I could be just like them, but that wasn't possible because everyone was cheating to get an advantage. Anabolic steroids were added to the list of Schedule III substances in the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990. This act makes it illegal to possess anabolic steroids in the United States without a prescription. Congress approved this decision in hopes of preventing the use of anabolic steroids in sports. However, most steroid users are actually non-competitive weightlifters and non-athletes who use steroids specifically for cosmetic purposes. Americans have become obsessed with their body image, and congress should not hold people back from wanting to look their best. Steroids are a synthesized version of any natural human hormone such as estrogen or testosterone, which is the most commonly produced and used steroid. This practice began in the 1930s and was marked as the invention of steroids. Steroids were originally created to treat hormone deficiencies such as male hypogonadism (Steroids 101). But steroids were not used exclusively for these muscle-wasting diseases. Soon after their creation, steroids were administered to Nazis to increase aggression and strength (Steroids 101). In the 1960s, steroids were banned from major sports organizations, and in the 1990s, congress passed the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990 (Steroids 101).
