Television does more than entertain its viewers. Reality shows have given the American people a bad name. Reality shows that Americans watch them every day even all over the world. For example, shows like Jersey Shore, The Real House Wives, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Hunny Boo Boo, and Duck Dynasty represent Americans. The rest of the world sees Americans as childish, aggressive, spoiled, rich, stupid, disgusting, and/or rednecks. The first is the show Jersey Shore, a show about a group of people living in New Jersey who only care about tanning, working out, and partying. In the show people have made an obsession with tanning until their skin turns orange and then they continue to tan. This is not true as Americans believe that many UV rays are harmful to them. This has caused many foreign viewers to have the idea that Americans are obsessed with tanning. This show also gave viewers the perception that Americans don't know how to behave in public. An example of behavioral problems is when they all went out to dinner and sat there arguing and insulting each other. However, producers make actors do these types of things because it helps the show's ratings. Another inaccurate characteristic linked to Americans is that they constantly train and try to look their best; Although many Americans try to look their best, they don't always obsess over it to the point of always being at the gym or in a tanning booth. The final characteristic that this show has given Americans is the fact that they will constantly drink, party, and seek sex with anyone. It gave the world the idea that Americans are a drunk, out of control, sex-crazed society... middle of paper... of drunk, spoiled people who are incapable of using their common sense. It also gave the middle class the image of a fat, ignorant and disgusting people. People living in the Southeast are assumed to be crazy, lazy, destructive, and kill for fun. Finally, the media has had such a large impact that Americans have created stereotypes about themselves and others. These reality shows represented Americans and made the world judge Americans based on the representations on television. Works Cited “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” Wikipedia.
