In “Terrorists R' Us” (Adbusters, August 2004) Ziauddin Sardar concludes that ordinary people are terrorists too. According to him, firstly, ordinary people cause through environmental and cultural systems the same destruction caused by terrorists, sometimes even worse. It also argues that inequalities, exploitation and imperialism have become an integral part of our policies and system; typical traits of terrorists. Therefore, he believes that to have a terrorism-free future, we must first reform and correct ourselves rather than the terrorists. While these reasons may seem convincing, Sardar has attempted to establish a false causal link between the actions of common people and the prevailing problems they face. In reality, ordinary people are not really terrorists as the author claims in his article. The Oxford Dictionary defines a terrorist as a person who uses violence and intimidation to pursue political objectives (Oxford English minidictionary, 2006, p. 576). Sardar points out that terrorists often have a legitimate complaint about their actions. Comparing this to ordinary people, he argues that people are motivated by greed and domination in our right to control the world; however, this is a hasty generalization. Not all people are greedy and selfish; There are thousands of selfless, caring and good-natured people. Furthermore, Sardar compares and contrasts the destruction caused by terrorists and common people. While it is true that common people cause some destruction, Sardar merely gave distorted statements about the destruction caused by common people without providing any explanation for it. For example, he says that ordinary people kill in m...... middle of paper ......ter world. In short, to have a future without terrorism, we must first deal with terrorists rather than ourselves.
