Hamlet enters the door and asks his mother what is bothering her. Gertrude tells him that he has offended his father by talking about Claudio. Hamlet tells her that she has offended her father, King Hamlet. Hamlet relentlessly tries to intimidate his mother, and she shouts that he is trying to kill her. Polonius shouts for help from behind the curtain, and Hamlet draws his sword and pierces the tapestry, killing Polonius and leaving him for dead on the floor. Hamlet accuses Gertrude of lusting after Claudius, and she begs Hamlet to stop and leave her alone. King Hamlet's ghost reappears to Hamlet, but only he can see it. Hamlet thinks that the ghost has come as his mother's protector. The ghost tells Hamlet to be kinder to her. Gertrude is convinced now more than ever that her son is mad, but Hamlet tells her that it is not madness and begs her to confess her guilt to him and to God. He even asks her to stop lusting after Claudius. Hamlet then drags Polonius' body out of the room and moves
