It's very intriguing and for the audience this is very important because as we progress through the story and see how crazy Kurtz has really become, you can see the theme of madness on display. On page 28 of Heart of Darkness we discover that Kurtz came to the Congo to set up stations to improve the morals of the natives (Conrad). Unfortunately the natives began to treat Kurtz as some sort of god and it went to his head and he was smart enough to use this to his advantage, driving him mad. Getting closer and closer to Kurtz's station and becoming intrigued by Kurtz as a person, Marlow begins to realize that Kurtz is not inherently evil. She admires him almost as much as she disagrees with his decisions
