In pursuing my ELL endorsement, I have found it very helpful to interview current ELL teachers. They shared their knowledge and expertise in this field. I interviewed the middle school ELL teacher at my school, an upper elementary ELL teacher, and an early elementary teacher in my district. I asked twelve questions regarding their experience teaching ELLs. These responses are valuable to prospective ELL teachers and general education teachers who teach ELL in their classrooms. I found it interesting that of the three ELL teachers interviewed, only one had personal ELL experience. This teacher teaches at my middle school. She moved here from Poland when she was nine. He knew nothing of English beyond basic words like colors and days of the week. This personal experience can help her immensely, because she understands her students' experience and students can identify with her. This teacher is the only bilingual of the three I interviewed. Interestingly, they are also two of three first-year teachers who teach ELLs. These two educators were assistants in the program prior to this teaching job and both received IRC approval. The other elementary teacher has been teaching ELLs for twenty years and has a lot of experience. I was interested in knowing how ELL teachers relate to their students from different backgrounds and cultures. Each said they try to learn about students' cultures. All teachers felt it was important to make a connection. They suggested taking an interest in the student's native language and family life, or asking students to share their language, holiday traditions, and foods. ELL teachers can also try to incorporate different cultures to enrich their lessons. I was a...... middle of paper ......an elementary teacher notices huge improvements with her young students. She sees how they gain confidence and language and, thanks to her, participate and speak more in class. The upper elementary ELL teacher knows that these students need a lot of support. He feels like he's really making an impact. Her former students occasionally contact her to update her on their situation. Teaching ELL students can be a challenging, but important role. I realize how dedicated these teachers are to their students. I also realize how important proper training is for the teacher and I think I will be better prepared thanks to the lessons I take. Although teaching ELLs can be difficult, it is a very rewarding experience. I look forward to helping the ELL students in my classroom and can use the information from this survey to continue to support their growth.
