Use verbal, dramatic, and situational ironies in "The Cask of Amontillado" to show vivid details. The pervasive irony of Montresor's narrative complicates attempts to understand his motivations and the other conflicts at the center of the tale. At the same time, layers of irony also contribute to the horror tone of the story (Short Story Criticism). The name “Fortunato” represents good luck, the opposite of what will happen to him. Montresor says: “My dear Fortunato, fortunately you have met. How extraordinarily well you are today", he is putting on a play so that Fortunato will follow him into the catacombs (985). Meeting him begins Montresor's plan to kill Fortunato. "Nemo me impune lacessit" (987). The motto on the coat of arms of Montresor means translated from Latin: "No one attacks me with impunity", this is the result of Fortunato's action insults that Montresor is killing him (Rambo).
