F. Ogburnin first used the term cultural delay to explain social change. Ogburn classified culture into two categories: 1. Material culture and 2. Non-material culture. By material culture, Ogburnin means objects associated with a cultural group, such as clothing and food; any physical object to which we give social meaning. For example, the logo on a woman's bag might indicate that she follows fashion (Kendall, 2005). Likewise, such physical aspects of a culture help define the behaviors and interpretation of its members. For example, technology is a vital aspect of material culture in the United States today. Whereas, by non-material culture, Ogburnin refers to the language, family, religion and education that people learn as the culture from which they come.
