Seal slaughter has been taking place on ice floes off the east coast of Canada in two areas, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the eastern Magdalen Islands, for nearly half a decade. Every year, thousands of Canadian fishermen kill and shoot seals between the ages of two weeks and two months, drag them out, and skin the pups while they are still alive and conscious. They sell the skin for leather goods and fashion garments while the body remains are left on the ice to rot. I believe that the process of seal clubbing is cruel and should be stopped before the seal population is endangered. Harp seals are usually the main target of seal hunting. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 98 percent of harp seals were killed when they were less than three months old. Seals are slaughtered at around 25 days of age because harp seals lose their white coat at around 12-14 days of age. Over the past 50 years, seals captured have ranged from 6,399 to 255,056, and nearly one million seals have been killed in the past three years.
