Problems and Challenges of Generation Y The entire foundation of Generation Y seems to be made up of problems and challenges. Each problem is unique and poses a different threat to the generation: some are physical, some are financial, and some are environmental threats. Our addiction to mood-altering substances and media are two of the biggest challenges facing Generation Y. However, upon closer examination, every single problem can be traced back to a singular root, low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is a huge problem in our generation. This characteristic tends to be overlooked until disasters like those at Virginia Tech and Columbine occur. Some say we're just a bunch of crybabies. In reality, however, Generation Y is a seriously imbalanced generation. We are “eagers,” not whiners. We have needs and desires that are difficult to satiate. Some may feel that we need constant appeasement to be satisfied when in reality what is important is getting what we want and need. It seems that if this need or desire cannot be satisfied we turn to other things. Some fill this lack of fulfillment with ambition, sex, drugs, alcohol and others with consumerism. This constant craving cannot be healthy. Many people see our generation as overly confident and sometimes arrogant and I agree that our generation has this feeling of entitlement, but it's tied to that desire factor. Our generation, to put it bluntly, is spoiled. Our parents, our teachers, our games, our media have always given us attention and praise. For some, this goes straight to the head and their ego explodes. Others accept the praise and run with it, learning from it because “[t]here is tremendous power in optimism and confidence.” (You were... middle of the paper... drugs. Generation Y is one of the brightest and most ambitious generations yet and I hope they don't get lost in the world of drugs. Generation Y needs to focus on what needs to be changed instead that about what currently exists. What currently exists is a broken system, if that's all we see it will never change. As a future generation and as the future of the world, it's our job to fix this. We have to change this idea that all of this what we see and hear is credible because it is not. What we see and hear are someone's personal opinions and those opinions are usually distorted, whether they are influenced by politics or greed take this into consideration when we watch television or when we read a magazine. These people want your money or they want your vote and half the time they could care less about your personal well-being.
