Topic > Animal Testing - 822

For years now, people have been using animal testing to create new ways to help save the human race. There are people who believe that it helps and that it needs to continue, while others are opposed and want to fight for the elimination of animal testing. Scientists fight for the cures needed to help humanity, but struggle to do so while people fight against their ongoing work. But as Jennifer A. Hurley stated, “History has already shown that animal testing is not essential to medical progress.” Stuart WG Derbyshire believes that “the best hopes of treating or curing any number of diseases all lie in current animal experiments”. Both sides have evidence that can prove that both are right. But there are negative arguments that can prove the opposite. The real question to ask is: does animal testing really help advance medical research? There are billions of other species on our planet. And each of these species is, in fact, different in its own way. It is absurd to believe that human diseases or foods can be cured with information gathered during animal experiments. We as humans are all unique and highly complicated. The information gleaned from animal testing would not be accurate for a human in need of a cure. “The tests would not cooperate with the human body as they do with the animal on which they are tested. A good number of scientists agree that the methodology is invalid and counterproductive for today's biomedical research. There are only two ways to address human health problems. And that is to practice the prevention and elimination of environmental toxins." (Burgos) This fact shows that not everyone believes that animal testing is not appropriate in a...... middle of paper ......progress for medical research. They failed to show any progress in cancer research and it was proven that more than half, 51.5%, of their research was harmful to the human body (Hurley). You can't have it both ways right now. We cannot advocate for animal welfare and at the same time give an animal untested drugs or diseases, or open them up to test a new surgical procedure (Derbyshire). Not everyone believes in the same thing and has divergent opinions, but facts have shown that animal testing is absolutely not necessary for medical research. The question posed previously: does animal testing really help advance medical research? can only be answered with what the facts have shown. They have shown that animal testing does not help advance medical research and that animal testing should end.
