Stepping outside the box; Cultural Differences and International BusinessGittel PreroWritten Assignment 7International ManagementThe word culture has always been a word to which it is difficult to give an exact definition. There have been many people who have tried and succeeded in giving a good definition, but there has always been a discussion about it. I believe the reason why the word culture is difficult to define is because it is more than a definition, it is part of something that has a deeper, inner meaning. The book, International Affairs; Competing in the global market, defines culture as "a system of values and norms shared by a group of people and which, if taken together, constitute a life project". Each culture includes its own beliefs, morals, laws, knowledge, customs, art, and sometimes language. They each have their own unique lifestyle and take pride in what they do. The values of a culture are the foundation on which they rest. Values are the set of thought ideals that define for a culture what they believe is good or positive behavior and what they believe is bad or negative behavior. Values show people within the culture what is correct behavior and what is a desirable way to act. A culture's economic and political systems are usually based on their values. The way they do business and the way their government functions is based on their values. Their values show them and guide them in the ethical lifestyle. The differences between different cultures are very drastic, due to the fact that there are so many aspects of one culture and people come from different areas. Each culture lives with its own values, beliefs and traditions and is not influenced by the world around it... middle of paper... you should keep in mind the cultural and ethical differences between cultures. In some cases differences can lead to disaster and can end very badly. When choosing a country to work with, he should choose one with minimal differences and they should be differences that he would be willing to work with and to which he would be willing to adapt. Each culture has its own unique ways, values and ways of doing business. When doing business internationally, you have to keep these differences in mind and many times adapt to the differences. Ethics in international business is very difficult to define because each culture has its own ethics and each firmly believes that its way is the right one. When undertaking a business venture internationally, you should be aware of what you are getting into and be ready to make compromises, because this is the only way to successfully do business internationally.
