In the 21st century version of the Rapunzel fairy tale, the film “Tangled” depicts the troubled life of a teenage girl raised by a woman who is not her mother. Rapunzel is kidnapped from her crib as a baby by an evil witch, Gothel, with the sole purpose of using her magical hair to enhance her beauty and make her young again. As an enthusiastic Rapunzel ages, she longs to soon be released into a world she has yet to see. Gothel, who kidnapped Rapunzel for her selfish needs, persistently demonstrates poor parenting throughout the film, Gothel demonstrates narcissistic behavior towards Rapunzel. When they are both in front of the mirror, Gothel says, “Look in that mirror. I see a strong and confident young woman. Oh and look, you're here too! Gothel takes care of her own wants and needs, neglecting Rapunzel's desires. The adolescent stage of life is a period of time when teenagers need to find a personal identity and sense of self. Receiving positive reinforcement and encouragement from parents allows a teenager to discover who they want to be in life and gives them a sense of direction. According to Erik Erikson's developmental theory this is important for the process of forming a strong identity. (Kroger, 2006) Rapunzel is given no sense of self when she is constantly humiliated by what she thinks is her "mother." He often receives more criticism than compliments. The kind of parenting Gothel offers is authoritative and also a little neglectful. Demonstrates a very demanding personality without being reactive. Without reacting, he often leaves Rapunzel in her tower alone with her thoughts, causing her to befriend a little gecko. Learning systems like frog jumping or educational television programs are also a hot topic when it comes to giving your child a boost in the education department. Since this is still “average”, the question is; How much is actually useful and how much is too much? (Garrison & Christakis, 2005) Many researchers suggest that there are no negative effects of these educational programs. However, it may not be the education department that these children will miss. It has been found that more children who are preoccupied with media, even educational, are more likely to become obese, lack social skills and are less creative. There are pros and cons to every situation that occurs in life. When it comes to a child's development, balance is ultimately what must be achieved in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
