Is the hidden curriculum the problem? I believe Anyon makes a good point about how our democracy attempts to facilitate its social structure through subliminal teaching methods within our public schools. Some describe it as; “The “hidden curriculum” of schoolwork is in particular a tacit preparation” (Anyon page 188). David Lampert described the hidden agenda within Morris Berman's piece as “the subconscious destruction of democratic values” (Berman p.68). Anyon exemplifies how the government subtly implements, as it was called in Roman times, the ruling class, into today's public school sector. I have witnessed through Anyon that the subtle manipulation of teaching strategies, which helps adolescents' thinking process parallel their social class, is critical to learning development. Anyon details how each child's mind is guided differently within each social class to foster their correlations within society. While Anyon makes impressive lines of reasoning, I don't think his thesis tells the total truth for all learning. I believe that learning expectancy has a lot to do with a person's learning expectations. If a student were to attend Stanford University, I believe that because of the beliefs about expectations, the student would be able to complete Stanford University work. Verses if the same student attended a junior college, he would accomplish the work of the junior college. Now you have to understand that there is a difference...
