Topic > Ethanol as an Alternative Fuel - 546

Alternative fuels are becoming more important than ever in today's society, and different forms of ethanol are the most common. It is now common to see E10 in a pump, a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline, as all modern cars can use it. Today, ethanol makes up 10% of the U.S. gasoline supply. The reliability and effectiveness of ethanol is often questioned, especially the production of CO2 in the process of producing and using ethanol, as well as the difference in mileage between gasoline and ethanol. However, some types of ethanol do not produce as much CO2 as gasoline, either in the process or in actual use. Ethanol is clean and convenient, reducing gasoline prices, which saves money at the pump and in the economy. Although ethanol has many positive aspects, there are still some negative aspects, namely the production of CO2 in the production of a certain amount of ethanol and the mileage. According to Nikhil Swaminathan, corn as a fuel actually generates more fossil fuel emissions during its transformation into ethanol than it avoids as a fuel. This has become the biggest controversy in the alternative fuel debate. Ethanol also has lower fuel economy than gasoline, causing cars to get slightly less mileage. The Environmental Protection Agency says E10 reduces mileage by about 3%. It also absorbs water, causing problems in classic cars and recreational vehicles such as boats, airplanes and other outdoor vehicles. Some are also concerned about growing corn for ethanol production, as it would replace food crops with fuel crops. Despite these drawbacks, the number of positive aspects of ethanol far outweigh the negative ones. Ethanol itself produces fewer greenhouse gases than gasoline in both fuel use and the production of some fuels. Ethanol has lower emissions... half of the paper... Improved public health."
