Who were the Goliards and how did they influence music? The Goliards were wandering scholars eager for adventure. They were named after "Bishop Goliath", a fallen priest who they often sang about, but was probably a fictional character. Some of the more serious students traveled from university to university in search of specific knowledge, but most were in search of wine, women and songs. They wrote a variety of songs; including love songs, political satire and drinking songs. Although only a few of the remaining works have musical notation, it is believed that almost all of their writings were intended to be sung. Jolly songs appear to be the earliest known examples of secular music (Snell). How did the gender roles of men and women differ? Many people during this time believed that women should go out in public and spend time with friends, but like children, they should be seen and not heard. A decent woman was said to be one who constantly wore a veil in public, did not speak frequently, and did not exchange trinkets as a sign of affection with men (Morris 41-57). Few women worked during the Middle Ages, however some devoted themselves to writing or nursing. The main role of women was to take care of their children and husband and to take care of their home. They would have to provide for the husband's needs at all times while the man was out earning money to support the family. Men, on the other hand, were considered the most important people in the family and members of society and were treated with respect and admiration ("Medieval Gender").What was feudalism and what role did it play in society?During this period in All' era, feudalism was 'the law of the land' because it was the basis on which the top... middle of the paper was based...
